Networks' reasoning for passing on various pilots will mostly just make you dislike NBC more:

NBC passed on Mulaney because though it was liked by “comedy geeks,” NBC executives didn’t like it. Why? Well, EW suggests because NBC is going for a “family theme” in its comedies and “moving away from smarter-narrower-snarkier titles.” This despite the fact that that worked so well for the network last fall. Then there’s the case of The Sixth Gun, based on a popular comic book, which NBC passed on because the network “felt it played too much like a geeky Syfy show and not enough like a big broadcast network show.” This despite the number one drama on TV being about zombies.

NBC Passes on 'Mulaney' | Splitsider:

Following a flurry of sitcom cancellations, NBC has opted not to pick up the pilot for SNL writer/stand-up John Mulaney’s new sitcom Mulaney. An ensemble multi-camera show staring Mulaney, Martin Short, Elliott Gould, SNL’s Nasim Pedrad, and stand-ups Griffin Newman and Seaton Smith and executive produced by Lorne Michaels, Mulaney seems like a slam-dunk on paper. I attended the pilot taping, and it was super funny, so it comes as a huge disappointment that NBC opted not to pick up the show. The pilots they did pick up had better be good.

“I first met John when he was writing for Demetri Martin. I thought he was 12 and must be some sort of genius. I saw him perform with Nick Kroll around the time he was hired as a writer at SNL and realized he was indeed a genius. His comedy was so sharp. Then we started writing together. His ability to come up with the clearest, economic, yet original jokes was astounding. He’s so fast. I’ve had the honor to work with people like Trey Parker, Tina Fey, Larry David, and he’s in that camp. John’s one of those guys who is just born with it. He had no choice but to be the funniest guy in the room.”

John Mulaney's Pilot Taping Was Last Night, and It Was Great:

A taping for John Mulaney’s NBC sitcom pilot Mulaney was held in Los Angeles last night, and it turned out very funny thanks to a talented cast and a tight, joke-packed script. I was in the live studio audience for the taping, and, while I can’t share any details or spoilers about the pilot, I can say that the taping went well and NBC would be crazy not to pick it up for the fall.
